From the POV of a California Roll

lost in a moment from dennis wheatley on Vimeo.

Sushi is so delicious! But have you ever wondered how the roll felt just before you ate it? Take a look at this creative clip that takes you into the mind’s eye of your lunch.

The Doghouse

You gotta check out this great viral video from the most unlikely of advertisers — JC Penny. This high-concept, well executed video proves that buying jewelry (from JC Penny) can save you from some uncomfortably living quarters. Two paws up!

Stop Motion Music Video

Over 8,500 still photographs and a nifty frame morphing technique come together to form a fluid stop-motion retelling of a couple that’s riding the rails of a rocky romance in this music video for Taproot’s “Wherever I Stand”. Mad props to my buddy, Danny Perez, who served as Director of Photography.

“Melt” by Nicole Simone

Had the pleasure of being on the set for some of the scenes of this music video. Producer Dell Torres lined up some really talented kids for this shoot. The production design was especially well done. Shooting on the Sony EX3, Director Abazar Khayami got a lot of production value out of a tiny budget, and tells an interesting visual story.

Video Sharing in HD

Amazing how so many of us are used to watching TV and movies on High-Definition at home, but then turn to our computers and watch YouTube videos of embarassingly sub-standard definition.

Well, Vimeo.com is here to share the HD wealth and make pixelization a pain of the past!

The first site to enable HD video sharing, Vimeo.com is easy, friendly and free! With HD camcorders becoming more and more accessible to the masses, consumers and professional videomakers alike can share their HD videos with others. But not just the streaming version… Vimeo also allows (registered) viewers to download the original file to their hard drive for offline viewing as well.

Clearly, HD is the future – on the screen and the monitor.

Blurring the Lines Between Stills & Motion

There are some truly amazing digital still cameras in the market. But earlier this year, Nikon launched the D90 – the first DSLR to offer video recording, with the ability to record HD 720p videos, with mono sound, at 24 frames per second. Determined to win the race, Canon shot out with its EOS 5D Mark II; with the abilitiy to record 1080p video at 30fps!

Let’s be clear… this is not your average “video mode”. These pro-sumer cameras range from $999 to over $3,000, and allow a photographer/videographer the freedom of using interchangeable (standard 35mm) lenses and capture video images with the same versatility and expanded depth of field they enjoy when shooting stills.

Enjoy this amazing video sequence created by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Vincent Laforet using a pre-production Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR. Amazed…? We’ll check out the making-of.

Photoshop Speed Painting

It’s amazing what you can do with Photoshop…

I think it was 1992 when I first starting working with Photoshop. And while many other design and layout programs have come and gone, Adobe’s Photoshop – now in its 11th iteration – is still the industry standard and by far my software to work with.

So after all these years I thought I had learned my share of tricks and picked up some speed. But surfing through YouTube I found several talented designers using this great program to create truly incredible digital works of art; and doing it in lighting speed.

You must check out this video clip of Martin Missfeldt’s Photoshop-based speed painting of Albert Einstein. Pure Genius!

Looking Up

Growing up in NYC means that I’ve witnessed the evolution of the tremendous mosaic revival that has been transforming the train riding experience. Over the past couple of decades, various artists have created public works for the MTA, many of which I’ve either stopped to admire, or noticed in a flurry as my train sped through a station. On my latest trip to NY, one particular station took my breath away.

I have spent a considerable amount of time on the outdoor Queensboro Plaza above Long Island City, waiting for the N train, and have gotten to know the skyline well. Ellen Harvey masterfully captures the effect of standing above the city and executes it underground at the Queens Plaza E/F station. Yet another reason to visit LIC!

Bring Your Daughter to Work Day

Because one Star Wars themed post wasn’t enough, I present to you now Storm Trooper “Bring Your Daughter to Work Day!” Starring the voice talents of Donald Faison, of Clueless fame, as Gary the Storm Trooper.

This is brought to you by the genuises at “Robot Chicken” an all-stop motion animation troupe including founding member Seth Green. You can catch this program on Cartoon Network late nights as a part of their Adult Swim line up.
